What is SIBO?
SIBO is Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth. This occurs when the natural bacteria in your stomach start to over grow.
Symptoms Would Be
- Pain in the stomach after eating
- Bloating
- Cramps
- Gas
- Constipation
- Diarrhea
- Feeling full
What Causes SIBO?
SIBO isn’t well understood. What we do know is that changes in the pH of the stomach could cause and increase in the growth of gut bacteria. If the immune system is compromised that could cause it too.
SIBO Has Been Associated With
- Low stomach acid, Hypochlorhydria
- Gastroenteritis
- IBS
- Celiac disease
How do you test for SIBO?
There is a breath test that is done to measure hydrogen and methane. The test can be done at home or in the doctor’s office.
Treatment for SIBO
Depending on the test results will depend on treatment. Treatment may consist of antibiotics, herbs, diet, etc.
Some people may have reoccurrence of SIBO and will have to go through treatment again.
